Regional Overview
Visiting Australia? Discover our main wine states and regions
Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Lawson's confirms 1996 as a top vintage | |
Sep 03 2001 | Author: Orlando/Wyndham Group |

The 1996 red wines from Coonawarra and Padthaway are now recognised as being among the best of the last decade - and the 1996 Lawson's Padthaway Shiraz is right at the top of the list.
Vintaged entirely from the tiny 2.8 hectare Lawson's vineyard planted in 1968 at Padthaway, the wine is very distinctive and characterised by its intense crimson colour, great concentration of fruit flavours and full-bodied palate.
'Lawson's has helped create Australia's reputation for high quality shiraz,' said Orlando Red Winemaker, Sam Kurtz, 'and has quickly become a benchmark single vineyard wine.
'It is a big, full-bodied shiraz that manages to combine both power and elegance, and will reward extended cellaring.'
Lawson's vineyard is located on the edge of the shoreline of an ancient seabed and surrounded by stands of old eucalypts. The well drained, deep sandy soil stresses the 33-year-old vines, giving rise to low yields of exceptional quality.
Mr Kurtz said the 1996 vintage was one of the Padthaway's best in recent years, with mild summer temperatures and little rainfall preceding the vintage. Conditions during vintage were warm and dry, resulting in premium quality grapes from the Lawson's vineyard and a wine with intense colours, concentrated minty flavours and outstanding structure.
The 1996 Lawson's is the 11th vintage to be released and it has so far won seven gold medals - bringing the Lawson's total to 15 trophies and more than 90 gold medals in Australian and international wine shows since its first release in 1990.
Mr Kurtz said the 1996 Lawson's had been given a lengthy maturation for 25 months in specially seasoned new American oak hogsheads, with a further 31 months' bottle maturation before release.
He described the 1996 Lawson's as being full bodied with a tight structure, powerful eucalypt and spice flavours leading the rich, silky tannins, with an excellent length of flavour.
'Despite the extended maturation, the 1996 Lawson's is still a very youthful wine at five years of age,' Mr Kurtz added. 'It is a wine that will continue to develop and will reward careful cellaring for at least 15 to 20 years.'
The 1996 Lawson's Padthaway Shiraz is available nationally for around $60.
